Mr Kiran Karnik describes himself as a “public non-intellectual”, with interest and involvement in a range of public issues. In the course of a career of over four decades, he has had the unique experience of straddling the diverse spheres of government, business and civil society with equal comfort and accomplishment. Currently, he is Chair of Oxfam India, Chairman of the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (a university set up by the Delhi government), and President of India Habitat Centre. He is also on the Board of other educational institutions, and NGOs in the fields of public service broadcasting, population, reconciliation and development. He was Chairman of the government-appointed Board that took charge of Satyam Computer Services in 2009 (after the biggest corporate fraud in India), and oversaw its successful re-habilitation and sale.

He has been on many key government committees. He was a Director on the Board of Reserve Bank of India till September 2015.He has been appointed a Director on the Board of Reserve Bank Information Technology Private Limited since August 2016 and is an independent Director on a few company Boards.

Mr Karnik’s last full-time job (2001-2008) was as President of NASSCOM, the premier trade body and the “chamber of commerce” for the IT software and services industry in India. During his six year tenure at NASSCOM, industry exports grew almost 8 times, nearing the USD 50 billion mark, and NASSCOM itself became a globally-known and respected brand. This won him wide recognition as the guiding force for the Indian IT industry. By providing perspective and background information, he has been instrumental in promoting India’s technology strength to the world.

Prior to joining NASSCOM in 2001, Mr Karnik was the Managing Director at Discovery Networks in India where he spearheaded the launch of Discovery Channel in South Asia in August 1995, and Animal Planet (a Discovery – BBC joint venture) in 1999. From 1991 to 1995, Mr Karnik was Founder-Director of the Consortium for Educational Communication, which was responsible for the Countrywide Classroom broadcasts and other ICT initiatives of India’s University Grants Commission.

Earlier, Mr Karnik worked for over 20 years at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he held various positions including that of Founder-Director of ISRO’s Development and Educational Communication Unit. His work in ISRO involved conceptualizing and managing applications of space technology. He was a key player in the pioneering India-USA Satellite Instructional TV Experiment (SITE) and was deeply involved in the conceptualisation and planning of the multi-purpose INSAT system.

Mr Karnik has worked in the United Nations in New York and Vienna as Special Assistant to the Secretary-General of UNISPACE 82. He has done consulting assignments for WHO, The World Bank, UN Institute for Disarmament Research, Ford Foundation, and an extended one for UNESCO in Afghanistan.

Mr Karnik has been conferred many awards and accolades. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007 (a civilian honour conferred by the Government), the ‘Dataquest Lifetime Achievement Award’ (2011) and ‘Dataquest IT Person of the Year, 2005’. BusinessWeek named Mr. Karnik as one of the ‘Stars of Asia’ in 2004 and he was selected as Forbes magazine’s ‘Face of the Year 2003’, for being a driving force behind India’s off-shoring wave. In 1999, he was conferred the Vikram Sarabhai Award for Educational Communication, and in 1998, International Astronautical Federation awarded Mr Karnik the Frank Malina medal for Space Education. The Kheda Communications Project, in which he was deeply involved, won wide national and international acclaim, including the first UNESCO-IPDC Prize for Rural Communication. The government-appointed Board for Satyam Computer Services (which he chaired) has received many awards, including the Businesspersons of the Year awards from CNN-IBN and NDTV Profit, and the IT Persons of the Year from Dataquest.

Mr Karnik regularly writes for various major national publications and occasionally lectures at important national institutes and international conferences. His book on NASSCOM and the Indian IT industry (‘The Coalition of Competitors’, Harper Collins, 2012) has been very well received.A post-graduate from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Mr Karnik holds an Honours degree in Physics from Bombay University.

Dr Deepak B Phatak is a teacher, and has been working with IIT Bombay since 1971. He is a Professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering. His main concern currently is to use technology for improving quality of education, at a large scale commensurate with the national aspirations. Towards this end, he has expanded the synchronous distance education, which he started at IIT Bombay 15 years ago, into an innovative program for training 10,000 teachers at a time. With other colleagues, he has tried to combine synchronous and asynchronous teaching/learning mechanisms. He has been working on MOOCs, and has introduced ‘blended or hybrid MOOCs’ for Indian students. He is now trying to extend this approach for vocational/skill training, and for school education.

He believes in developing affordable technological solutions. He set up the Affordable Solutions Lab in IIT and developed low cost devices such as Smart Card Readers, and Clickers. He headed the national initiative on Aakash tablets. He encourages entrepreneurship and had set up an IT business incubator in IIT Bombay in 1999, which has now morphed into SINE (Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship).

As an expert in Databases and Information systems, he has been an advisor and IT consultant to several organizations and companies. He has worked on many company boards, has won several distinctions and awards, and was conferred ‘Padma Shri’ by Government of India in 2013. He received the prestigious lifetime achievement award of IIT Bombay in 2014.Dr. Phatak believes that teaching cannot just be one’s profession. It must be the ‘Dharma’ of a teacher. His dream is to see a resurgent India, catching up with the world, using ICT as the spring board.

Shri B.P. Kanungo took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on Apr 3rd, 2017. The Government of India, on March 11, 2017 has appointed him as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, for a period of three years from the date of his taking over charge of the post on or after April 3, 2017 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shri Kanungo was Executive Director of the Reserve Bank before being elevated to the post of Deputy Governor. As Deputy Governor, Shri Kanungo will look after the Department of Currency Management, (DCM), Department of External Investments & Operations, (DEIO), Department of Government & Bank Accounts (DGBA), Department of Information Technology (DIT), Department of Payment & Settlement Systems (DPSS), Foreign Exchange Department (FED), Internal Debt Management Department (IDMD), Legal Department (LD) and Premises Department (PD).

Shri Kanungo, a career central banker, joined the Reserve Bank of India in September 1982. He has worked in several functional areas of the banks such as foreign exchange management, banking & non-banking Supervision, currency management, government and bank accounts and public debt. He has served as the head of regional offices of the Reserve Bank at Jaipur and Kolkata besides holding the position of the Banking Ombudsman for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. As Executive Director, he looked after Foreign Exchange Management, Internal Debt Management and Government and Bank Accounts.

Born on May 5, 1959, Shri Kanungo holds a Master’s degree in humanities from Utkal University, besides holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law.

A leading authority in the global IT sector, Mr Krishnakumar Natarajan co-founded Mindtree in 1999 and has played key roles in building the company’s innovative approach to delivering IT services and solutions to global 2000 enterprises. Mr Natarajan was instrumental in setting up Mindtree’s U.S. operations, driving expansion in Europe and Asia Pacific regions, and transforming Mindtree’s IT services business. Today, his mission as Executive Chairman is to focus on leadership development and ensure a high quality of governance. He also actively mentors different business groups within the company and works closely with the start-up ecosystem to bring in innovative models of business transformation for clients.

In his prior role as CEO and Managing Director, Mr Natarajan was responsible for making Mindtree a global IT player. Mr Natarajan’s efforts as a business leader have been recognized worldwide, winning him several laurels. He was ranked amongst the most valuable CEOs in India by Businessworld & Forbes in 2016. He won Bloomberg UTV’s award as the CEO of the Year in 2010, Business Today CEO of the year award in 2014 and was recognized by Chief Executive Magazine’s as one of the twelve global leaders of tomorrow. EY honoured him with Entrepreneur of the year 2015 in Services.

A 35-year IT industry veteran, Mr Natarajan held several key positions at Wipro before co-founding Mindtree. During this time, he launched and grew the ecommerce division of Wipro, served as Group Vice President of human resources, and was Chief Marketing Officer for Wipro’s IT business. In 2013, Mr Natarajan served as Chairman of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), where he worked to strengthen the Indian IT industry to be a globally competitive ecosystem comprised of both established and emerging companies.

Mr Natarajan is an active member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He is also a regular speaker at international IT industry conferences and a faculty member at management schools around the world. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering, Chennai, India, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Xavier Institute, Jamshedpur, India.

Mr Rajesh Doshi is an Alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai), with Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (1973 batch). He began his career as Trainee Engineer with Tata Burroughs Ltd., which was later merged with TCS Ltd.

Mr Rajesh Doshi has been associated with National Securities Depository Ltd. since its inception in 1996 in capacity of Executive Director IT with overall responsibility to set-up and manage Information technology Systems for NSDL’s many projects including main Securities Depository system, Tax information Network (TIN), Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) system for National pension Scheme (NPS) etc.

Subsequent to demerger of NSDL’s non-depository business into a separate company, viz. NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Ltd (NeGIL), he assumed additional charge of overall operations of depository business in capacity of Senior Executive Director and retired in this post on 29thFebruary, 2016.

He was a member of the board of NSDL’s wholly owned subsidiary company NSDL Database Management Ltd (NDML) and was designated Director In-charge. NDML is engaged in undertaking several socially useful, first of its kind IT-centric nationwide projects with Pan India reach, including National Insurance – policy Repository (NIR), SEZ online system for Ministry of Commerce (MOC), National Skills Registration (NSR) portal in association with NASSCOM, PayGov payment gateway for DeITY, KYC Registration Agency (KRA) system for securities market, National Academic Depository (NAD) to hold education awards of students etc.

Mr. Nandkumar Saravade is currently working as CEO, Reserve Bank Information Technology Pvt Ltd (ReBIT). ReBIT has been set up as a fully owned subsidiary of RBI for technology management and cyber security for RBI’s systems and the Indian banking sector. Till recently, he worked as CEO, Data Security Council of India, a think-tank specialising in cyber security policy research and advocacy. During 2013-15, he was an independent security professional and cybercrime expert, advising Ernst ∓ Young and ICICI Bank. Till September 2013, he worked as Director, Citibank India, heading Security, Investigation and Vigilance. During 2008-2011, he worked as General Manager, Financial Crime Prevention Group, ICICI Bank, where he looked after fraud risk assessment and controls reviews, application screening and vendor due diligence, transaction monitoring, investigations and regulatory reporting and compliance.

Till 2008, Mr. Saravade served with the Indian Police Service (IPS). His last assignment in the IPS was Director, Cyber Security and Compliance, NASSCOM, which involved policy formulation on cyber security and privacy, capacity building for law enforcement, advising NASSCOM members on incident response management and organising mass awareness campaigns on cyber security.

Mr Saravade served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for seven years, looking after enforcement of the Prevention of Corruption Act, investigation of bank frauds and economic offences. Mr Saravade was awarded the Prime Minister’s Baton and Revolver for being the Best All-round Probationer of the 1987 batch of the IPS and also the Indian Police Medal for Distinguished Services.

He has served on several technical advisory bodies, such as the High Level Group on Electronic Banking Controls Governance and Technology Risk Management Standards set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Cyber Security Project of Government of Maharashtra and Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of Government of India. He is a regular speaker at apex training institutes, technical conferences and industry forums.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad as well as a Masters’ degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Former Board Members

Mr R Gandhi currently serves as Deputy Governor of RBI. Mr Gandhi was Executive Director of the Reserve Bank before being taking charge as Deputy Governor.Mr Gandhi looks after the following portfolios: Department of Banking Operations and Development, Department of Non-Banking Supervision, Urban Banks Department, Department of Expenditure and Budgetary Control, Department of Information Technology, Legal Department, Premises Department and Risk Monitoring Department.

Having joined the Reserve Bank of India in 1980, Mr Gandhi has built,over these thirty-five years, expertise and experience in varied fields which include, payment systems and information technology, financial markets (money, securities, forex and capital market) operations and regulation, currency operations and management, personnel and human resources management, industrial credit and international banking. He had a three-year secondment to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He has also been the head of two regional offices of the Reserve Bank and held charge as the Director of the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), Hyderabad. He was the Executive Assistant to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for three years. He was also a Reserve Bank nominee on the Board of Directors of four public sector banks (at different points in time) for five years. He has been associated with various committees, working groups and task forces.

Born in 1956, Mr Gandhi has a Master’s degree in Economics from the Annamalai University, in Tamil Nadu, India. He also has post graduate level certificates in Management Information System from The American University, Washington DC, USA and in Capital Market from the City University of New York, New York, USA. He has taken special courses on Mathematical Economics, Econometrics, Development Banking and International Economics from The American University and the George Washington University, Washington DC, USA. His technical education includes a certificate course in System Programming from the IBM Education, Sydney, Australia and courses in ORACLE, Assembly Language, Networking, etc. He has a certificate in Gandhian Thoughts from the Madurai University, Tamil Nadu, India.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran (‘Chandra’) is the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading global IT solutions and consulting firm, a position he has held since 2009.Chandra has been appointed as a Director on the board of Tata Sons since October 25, 2016. He was also appointed as a Director on the board of India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India in 2016.

Under his leadership TCS has generated consolidated revenues of US $16.5 billion in 2015-16. With over 371,000 consultants, TCS has become the largest private sector employers in India with the highest retention rate in a globally competitive industry. TCS remains the most valuable company in India with a market capitalization of over USD 70 billion. He served as the chairman of NASSCOM, the apex trade body for IT services firms in India in 2012-13 and continues to be a member of its governing Executive Council.

Under his guidance, the company has refined its corporate sustainability program to focus on education, environment and wellness. TCS is deeply involved with STEM education initiatives in USA, UK and Australia. Through his active support of major marathons in New York, Chicago, Amsterdam, Mumbai and Bangalore, he has helped spread a message of health awareness across the firm’s employees globally as well as in the communities it operates in.

Chandra has received several awards and recognition in the business community. Recently he was awarded “Business Leader award” at the ET Awards for Corporate Excellence 2016. He also awarded Qimpro Platinum Standard Award 2015 (Business) and Business Today’s Best CEO 2015 (IT & ITEs). He was voted the ‘Best CEO’ for the fifth consecutive year by the Institutional Investor’s 2015 Annual All-Asia Executive Team rankings. During 2014 was voted as one of CNBC TV 18 - ‘Indian Business Icons'. He was also awarded CNN- IBN Indian of the Year 2014 in business category. Chandra was presented with the “Best CEO for 2014” by Business Today for the second consecutive year. He has also received the Medal of the City of Amsterdam - Frans Banninck Coqc - in recognition of his endeavor to promote trade and economic relations between Amsterdam and India.

Chandra was conferred with the honorary doctorate by JNTU, Hyderabad, India (2014). He has received Honorary Doctorate from Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Netherland's top private business school (2013). Chandra has also been conferred honorary degrees by many Indian universities such as the Gitam University, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, (2013) KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha (2012); and the SRM University (2010), Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Chandra joined the company in 1987 after completing Masters in Computer Applications from Regional Engineering College, Trichy, Tamil Nadu.Beyond the office, Chandra is an avid photographer, and a passionate long-distance runner who has completed several marathons around the world including Amsterdam, Boston, Chicago Berlin, Mumbai, New York, Prague, Stockholm, Salzburg and Tokyo.Born in 1963, Chandra lives in Mumbai, with his wife Lalitha and son Pranav.

Mr. Murlidhar Nambiar is currently working as Senior Vice President, Reserve Bank Information Technology Pvt Ltd (ReBIT) ∓ is responsible for Cyber security of Reserve Bank. Mr. Nambiar has 24 years of rich IT & Information security experience as a strategist, innovator and visionary. He has been instrumental in setting up & managing the information security divisions for MashreqBank (Dubai), ICICI Bank and Reliance Capital group. During his tenure, he's implemented various innovative solutions like Data flow analysis (DFA), worked on key security solutions like Privileged Identity management, SIEM / SoC environments, Business Continuity planning / Disaster Recovery, Incidence response and recovery (including forensics) and many more.

Towards latter part of his career, Mr. Nambiar also worked as Chief Technology officer for Apollo Munich Health Insurance, Reliance Life Insurance ∓ Reliance International business. This experience has enabled him to understand the technology challenges and related information security implications.

Mr. Nambiar is widely acknowledged as a domain expert and has been featured in number of publications. He has spoken at many seminars and conferences as well. In addition to winning many awards like Security strategist award, CIO 100, CISO 100, the Reliance Life insurance IT team led by him won the Technology Premier League 2013, inter corporate IT team competition, beating 22 other IT teams in Mumbai. He was also featured in a book The Innovative heroes, published by DynamicCIO.com - 2013 as one of Top 30 CIO's.

Mr. Nambiar is a post graduate in management studies ∓ Science graduate majoring in Physics from Mumbai University. In his spare time, Mr. Nambiar is an avid photographer, loves to travel, read and listen to old Hindi music.

Mr. Srivastav leads the Research and Innovation vertical at ReBIT. In this Industry facing role he is responsible for delivering ReBIT's threat intelligence strategy to strengthen cybersecurity posture for the financial sector, introducing new technologies for furthering the mandate of RBI of creating safe economic environment of growth and financial inclusion and working on policy research.

Mr. Srivastav started his career at Citibank’s software subsidiary COSL in 1997 and supported their central, eastern and European branch banking solutions and interfacing systems.Later he worked at a high-tech startup company in Maryland,USA leading development of their network management software for layer-1 optical network transport solution. Subsequently he joined Cisco and worked on video control systems focusing on cloud migration and application and infrastructure security. An avid technologist he has 8 patents in the area of video systems and cloud security. He has also received excellence award for his contributions in ATIS-IPTV Interoperability standards development forum. Immediately before joining ReBIT, he lead the KYC and AML solution initiatives at Equifax for major banks in US.

Mr. Srivastav graduated from St. Stephens’ College, Delhi University in 1995 and later completed his M.Sc Biotechnology from I.I.T Bombay in 1997. He holds an MBA degree with specialization in Finance from J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia, USA.

He is also a community worker and has designed and taught science and robotics to kids for several years, worked with Bhutanese refugees in Atlanta region and currently supports several social service initiatives in Prayag. He has authored a book called “Learning Science using Robotics” for middle and high school students based on his teaching experience with the kids.

Mr Joseph Joshy heads the Project Management Vertical at ReBIT. This Vertical would advise, implement and manage IT projects of the Reserve Bank as mutually decided between the Reserve Bank and the subsidiary.

In his previous avatar, Mr Joshy was with a tier-1 IT MNC for about 16 years with stints in US, Canada and Mexico. He has proven skills in Project, Program and Portfolio Management and has managed multi-million dollar projects with teams across multiple time zones in US, Canada, UK, China, Philippines and India. He has rich exposure to Application Services Delivery across different Software Development Methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Iterative etc.), ITIL based Production Support, Software Estimation, IT Roadmap Definition, Legacy Modernization, Business Case Articulation, Metrics driven Operations, Transition and Vendor Management.

Mr Joshy's experience include delivery responsibilities for all the Railroad sub-vertical clients across North Americas. Prior to that, he headed the People Systems IT Portfolio for his client, the world's largest retailer, serving the needs of a global 2.1 million client workforce spanning across recruitment, training, payroll, benefits, and all sub-domains related to HR. He also headed the Stores Portfolio with bottom-line responsibility for the mission-critical 24*7 POS Support with stringent SLAs impacting 10,000+ stores world-wide, catering to more than 400 Billion USD of client’s business. Additionally, he headed the LATAM portfolio spread across Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Earlier in his career with F100 clients, Mr Joshy led efforts for large transformational business programs leveraging SaaS model and Agile Development for Data Analytics, Portal Strategy, SOA Roadmap for client’s IT strategy and projects for Supply Chain initiatives.

Prior to joining ReBIT, Mr Joshy undertook a sabbatical to empower students from rural milieu with Startup culture alongside employability skills. During this social experiment, he was the CEO of TBI approved by Kerala Start Up Mission (KSUM) and served as the Director of Startups for institution under the Educational Trust, managed by the Archdiocese of Trichur in Kerala. He is a board member of the Governing Body/Board of the Trust and was also the Head of IT for the Trust.

Mr Joshy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and is a University rank holder. He holds a Master’s degree from BITS Pilani and has completed an Advanced Programme in Marketing from IIM Ahmedabad. He has won IEEE Outstanding Design Award, Open Design Contest at Tech Fest, IIT Bombay, Most Valuable Player Award, Best Project Award, Best Knowledge Management Practices Award, North America All Star Award, ESOPs for Performance among others. He has obtained PMP from Project Management Institute and CSQA from Quality Assurance Institute. He is also a certified Estimation Specialist and Agile Practitioner from Infosys and has a Certificado De Espanol from Instituto Hispania.

Mr Joshy is passionate about People Management & Leadership and has partnered with Infosys Leadership Institute for related initiatives. He has also spearheaded CSR initiatives in the education and sanitation domain. He is a chess enthusiast, proponent of maker culture and loves reading anything under the sun!

Jayaraman Pazhamalai, popularly known as JPM, has joined ReBIT as SrVP, System Audit.

JPM has more than 2 decades of Industry experience in the areas of IT, and more specifically, in the Information Security domain. He was leading the Information Security function for Wipro, as the Global Chief Information Security officer (CISO), with the responsibility of protecting employee information, as well as customer data of several Global Fortune 500 companies. During this tenure, he was the driving force behind building the Information Security office from ground-up, including achieving BS 7799 Certified Enterprise certification, ITGC-SOX certification for IT and Non-IT entities, setting up the Cyber Security Audit function, forming the Digital Forensics department and providing litigation support to legal department for e-discovery process, Risk Management and assurance practices. He and his team played an active role in reviewing Information Security during due-diligence phase of M&A.

Subsequent to the role as a CISO, Mr. Pazhamalai served as Head of Information Security and Technology Assurance for a captive unit of ANZ Bank in Bengaluru, holding responsibilities for Information Security Risk assessment, Supplier Security Risk assessment, ITGC controls assessment and Identity and Access Control program management functions.

JPM possesses Master’s Degree in in Mathematics and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science and applications. He has also recently completed Post-Graduate program in Business Analytics and Business Intelligence offered by Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai and Illinois Institute of Management, USA. He has to his credit CISA, CISSP, CISM and SABSA certifications in Information Security.

Shenoj Balaraman is heading the Human Resource Function for Reserve Bank Information Technology Pvt Ltd (ReBIT). With over18 years of progressive experience augmented by a strong back ground in Human resources. Till recently he was working as the Head of HR for Tata Consultancy Services Pune & Goa managing 23 thousand employees based out of Pune & Goa.

Out of 18 years of HR work experience he has spent 12 years in TCS, where he has played multiple roles such the Recruitment Head for India West, Emerging Markets India HR Head, followed by overseas stint of 2 years in Latin America where he managed the talent management and deployment function for the local employee base.Areas of expertise would encompass Talent Deployment, Talent Acquisition, Strategic HR Planning. Sound knowledge of labor related laws. Proven ability to function as a strategic HR Business Partner and develop and implement successful human resources management strategies to support corporate mandate.

In past, he has been associated with Zensar Technologies (RPG), Mafoi Management Consultants & Emcure Pharmaceuticals.

Shenoj hold Master’s Degree of Personnel Management from IMSSR (Pune University) & Diploma in Labor Laws and Welfare from Symbiosis Law College (Pune University).
